The flying horse, the Pegasus, is a fascinating part of mythology. As an artist, the challenge was to choose the right gesture. Over a few days, I witnessed two events which brought the piece together. One was a bird outside our window stretching it’s wing. The other was watching Quinn as Wendy groomed him. He frequently gives a big stretch, raising his head back and up to stretch his neck while simultaneously stretching one of his hind legs.
Next I needed to study the structure of wings. Help came from two wildlife artists who explained it well. Additionally in order to emphasize the gesture, there is no base.
The strength of the horse and the delicateness of the feathers make a wonderful juxtaposition in the piece.
I hope the power of the piece will give you a good feeling whenever you see it – just as a good “Morning Stretch”.
