I have become very interested in the use of bas relief in sculpture since doing “Over the Moon”. The idea of a bell came to mind rather unexpectedly. The whole shape of the bell was there. I was ready to sculpt! It is important to me to tell a story with every sculpture. As well, the bell is interactive/functional. I love that! It is fun to own, and it rings really well so you can hear it from far away.
On one side of the bell there is a buckaroo on a young horse who is giving him a little trouble. When working on a big ranch, you are given a string of horses to ride and train. Of those six to eight horses there are always a few colts who may be prone to bucking. On the other side of the bell is a buckaroo driving a cow back to the herd. This is the same colt. You will notice he has a hackamore on his head on both sides of the bell. You start colts in a hackamore. It is comprised of a rawhide nose band, leather headstall and twisted horsehair rope for reins, called a mecate rope.
Note the action, movement and shape of this piece. When supper is ready, or any other event, the best way to bring everybody together is to ring this “Buckaroo Bell”.
Let Curt tell you about this piece!
