How I love to watch horses when they are goofing off. Really, I love to watch horses anytime. Better yet, being up on their backs and going with them! The inspiration for this piece comes from a ranch I was working on in Carvel, Alberta, Canada. We raised Appaloosa horses that to show in everything from halter to western performance classes. Because they were shown, they were kept in the barn to keep them looking good and available for training.
But just like us, horses get bored just working all of the time. They need a break, just to go out and play once in a while. This ranch had some of the nicest pastures in the area, and periodically I would take the barn horses and turn them out for the day. When you turned them loose, you’d better look out! They would turn and run, kicking and squealing all over the pasture. This piece comes from those experiences. These three geldings have just been turned out and they are having a blast.
You can see the different personalities of the horses and how individual they are as you look at them. Facing the front, the horse on the right is the classy, athletic one. He’s the kind of horse you like to have in working events. The middle horse is cute, but as you look at him you notice that he’s a little podgy. He’s kind of lazy, but a good horse non-the less. He’s rearing up and squealing at the horses he sees in the next pasture over. The horse at the left is rather common looking, but he’s the kind you can put anyone on and know that he will take care of him. Every barn needs that kind of good, solid saddle horse.
No matter how great a horse is in the arena, how well bred he is, he’s still a horse. When they are turned out together, these geldings prove that, “Boys will be Boys”.
